As many as 86.50 percent of households in Tripura are currently receiving regular drinking water through pipeline connections, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha informed the state Assembly on Thursday.
The Chief Minister made the statement while replying to two separate questions raised by MLAs Jahar Chakraborty and Sudip Roy Barman in the Assembly. He said that out of a total of 7,50,849 households, piped drinking water has so far reached 6,49,470 households.
Dr Saha said the state government expects that by December 2028, citizens living in different rural and hilly areas of Tripura will receive purified drinking water regularly through household pipeline connections.
He further stated that during the last three years, 1,91,106 households in rural areas have been brought under the coverage of safe drinking water facilities.
Replying to a question on villages achieving 100% sanitation coverage, the Chief Minister said Tripura has 1,193 Gram Panchayats/Village Committees, covering 765 LGD-coded revenue villages. He informed the House that all Gram Panchayats and Village Committees in the state have achieved 100% sanitation coverage.
In response to another question raised by MLA Jitendra Majumder, the Chief Minister said that under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, drinking water connections have so far been provided to 21,413 households, while 90% of the work under the project has already been completed.
Replying to MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, Dr Saha said plans have been undertaken to construct two new water treatment plants to ensure the supply of purified drinking water in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area, and work orders have already been issued.
One of the projects is a groundwater treatment plant at Netaji Adarsha Shiksha Mandir, with a capacity of 550 lakh litres per day, while the second is a surface water treatment plant at College Tilla, with a capacity of 641 lakh litres per day.
The groundwater treatment plant at Netaji Adarsha Shiksha Mandir is expected to be completed by July 2027, while the surface water treatment plant at College Tilla is expected to be completed by January 2028, the Chief Minister said.
