Police have arrested five people, including a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader, for allegedly raping a Hindu woman in Bangladesh’s Comilla district on Saturday night, media reports said.
A video of the incident has now gone viral on social media.
According to two separate press releases, the prime accused, Md Fazor Ali, 36, was arrested around 5:00 am today, reported The Daily Star.
Ali is reportedly a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader.
The four other detained people were identified as Sumon, Romzan, Md Arif, and Md Anik.
A case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
Cumilla Superintendent of Police Nazir Ahmed Khan told The Daily Star that the case was filed at Muradnagar Police Station on Friday.
According to the case statement, the woman was raped at knifepoint in Ramchandrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar upazila, the newspaper reported.
The victim, a mother of two, went to visit her father's house nearly two weeks ago.
Fazor, who is a neighbour, entered the house while other family members were away.
He raped her at knifepoint and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident, according to the case statement filed by the victim the next day.
She said locals rushed to the spot after hearing her scream aloud.
They started beating up Fazor.
