I need to be careful about further commentary: Canada PM Mark Carney on Nijjar case after meeting Modi at G7

When he was asked about the discussion he had with Modi on the Nijjar case, Carney on Tuesday said, "We discussed the importance of having the law enforcement dialogue, not just dialogue, cooperation directly, the importance of addressing transnational repression...

"There is a judicial process that's underway, and I need to be careful about further commentary."

The relationship between India and Canada deteriorated when Carney's immediate predecessor Justin Trudeau alleged India's involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

A Canadian media report claimed that along with Modi, the Indian national security advisor and External Affairs Minister were also aware of the alleged plot.

Canada had expelled six Indian officials including its High Commissioner to only get reciprocated by India.

India strongly denied its involvement saying, "...such ludicrous statements made to a newspaper purportedly by a Canadian government source should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve."

However later in a statement that left India vindicated, Trudeau had said he had no "hard evidentiary proof" to back his claims that India government officials were involved in Nijjar's killing.

Meanwhile, Modi and Carney met for the first time in Kananaskis and agreed to take calibrated and constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, beginning with the early return of High Commissioners to each other’s capitals.

"This was the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since Prime Minister Carney assumed office following Canada’s recent general elections," the Indian government said in a statement.

"The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to hold frank and forward-looking discussions on the state of India-Canada relations and the way ahead," the statement said.
