Pakistani investigators confirm theft of 2.7 million citizens' data
A joint investigation team (JIT) in Pakistan has presented a report on the leak of 2.7 million people's data from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to the country's interior ministry, the Geo News broadcaster said on Wednesday, citing sources.
The JIT found that the data was stolen during the period from 2019 to 2023, the broadcaster said.
The leaks took place in the NADRA offices in Multan, Karachi, and Peshawar cities, the sources said.
The investigators found, while tracing the course of the data, that it was sent to Dubai in the UAE, the sources added.
The JIT report indicated there was proof that data was allegedly sold in Argentina and Romania.
It also recommended taking action against the senior officials of NADRA whose negligence led to the theft.
The JIT is headed by the director of the cyber crime department of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency and includes officials from the interior ministry, the telecommunication authority, and military intelligence.
