CIL, which accounts for over 80 percent of domestic coal production, also reported a 3.2 percent increase in coal offtake, reaching 64.3 MT last month compared to 62.3 MT in the corresponding period last year.

Coal offtake refers to the quantity of dry fuel supplied from the pitheads.

Among the 61.8 MT of coal produced by CIL last month, the highest share came from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) with 16 MT, followed by South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) with 14.1 MT, and Northern Coalfields Ltd with 11.8 MT, among others.

Although CIL's production for the fiscal year 2023-24 surged by 10 percent to reach 773.6 MT, it fell short of its target of 780 MT. In the preceding fiscal year 2022-23, Coal India Ltd had produced 703.2 MT of coal.
