Beef served instead of mutton! Kolkata pub apologises to YouTuber
Kolkata/IBNS: Olypub, the iconic Park Street restaurant in Kolkata, has issued a public apology following a controversial incident in which a waiter served a beef steak instead of mutton to YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty.
In a social media statement, Olypub described the incident on January 30, 2026, as an “unintentional but serious serving error.”
The restaurant expressed regret for hurting customer sentiments and reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and respect across all communities. Highlighting its 80-year legacy, Olypub thanked its supporters and promised to continue treating patrons and staff with dignity.
“It was a genuine mistake with no harm intended. We are truly sorry for this error and apologise profusely for inadvertently hurting our customers’ sentiments,” the statement read. “Olypub is built on a foundation of respect for all—irrespective of caste, creed, religion, or gender.”
The waiter, a Muslim, was arrested on Saturday following a preliminary investigation after Chakraborty filed a complaint at the Park Street Police Station on Friday night.
A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed Chakraborty confronting the waiter for serving him beef despite ordering mutton, while the restaurant manager watched.
“Do you know I was made to eat beef despite being a Brahmin? Will you eat pork being a Muslim? Is this a joke?” Chakraborty asked in the video. He also claimed that neither he nor his companions were informed that the dish contained beef.

The restaurant manager was seen reprimanding the waiter for allegedly failing to properly communicate with customers.
The video, later removed from Chakraborty’s Facebook page, drew mixed reactions online. Some criticized Chakraborty for communal remarks, while others condemned the alleged serving of beef to a Hindu customer.
After Olypub’s apology, Chakraborty announced on Facebook that he would withdraw his complaint.
“I went to the police station in a fit of anger—that is true. In that moment, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind because of Olypub’s casual approach to the mistake. I have never consumed beef in my life. From now on, I will be more careful and mindful,” he wrote.
