EC issues SIR hearing notice to cricketer Mohammed Shami; his brother Mohammed Kaif
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami and his brother Mohammed Kaif have been issued notices by the Election Commission to appear for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing in Kolkata, officials confirmed on Monday.
The notice was issued from Kartju Nagar School in the Jadavpur area of south Kolkata. Shami is registered as a voter in Kolkata Municipal Corporation Ward No. 93, which falls under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency.
His hearing has been scheduled between January 9 and 11.
According to sources cited by NDTV, the notice was issued after Shami allegedly failed to correctly fill out the voter enumeration form during the revision process.
Shami was unable to attend the initial hearing on Monday as he is currently in Rajkot, representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Although Shami hails from Uttar Pradesh, he has been residing in Kolkata for several years due to his cricketing career.
He moved to the city at a young age on the advice of his coach and later secured a place in the Bengal Under-22 team under renowned coach Sambaran Banerjee. He has also played in the Mohun Bagan Cricket Cup.
Separately, NDTV's sources said actor and Trinamool Congress MP Dev, also known as Deepak Adhikari, has also received a summons for an SIR hearing.
Notices have reportedly been sent to three other members of his family as well, though the date and time for their hearings have not yet been disclosed.
There has been no official response from Dev or his family so far. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has alleged that issuing such notices to Dev, an elected representative, amounts to harassment.
Dev was born in Ghatal in West Midnapore district but later moved to Mumbai with his family before settling permanently in Kolkata due to his acting career.
He currently resides at the South City residential complex and is a three-time Member of Parliament from Ghatal.
