Emergency was the biggest and darkest attack on Constitution: President Droupadi Murmu in Parliament

New Delhi/IBNS: In a statement potent enough to irk the Congress, President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday referred to the 1975 Emergency era- which was declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi- calling it "the biggest and darkest attack on Constitution".

Murmu made the remark while speaking about the Constitution in his address to the joint session of Parliament.

The President said, "The Indian Constitution is going to complete 75 years in a few months' time. The Constitution has withstood every challenge over the last 10 years. Even when the Constitution was being framed, there were a lot of powers which wanted India to be unsuccessful."

"The Constitution has been attacked a number of times since it was made. Emergency was the biggest and darkest attack on the Constitution. Chaos broke out in the entire country at that time.

"But the country has defeated such unconstitutional powers because democracy has remained a tradition in India," she added.

On the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also slammed the Congress over the Emergency, which completed 49 years on June 25, 2024.

The Prime Minister said, "Tomorrow is June 25. For those who are dedicated to the dignity of the Constitution of this country, those who have faith in the democratic traditions of India, 25 June is an unforgettable day.

"Tomorrow, on 25 June, it will be 50 years since the black spot was put on Indian democracy. The new generation of India will never forget that the Constitution was completely rejected, India was turned into a prison, and democracy was completely suppressed."
