Pune Porsche crash horror: Bombay HC directs release of minor accused

By IBNS
Jun 25, 2024..

The Bombay High Court has directed the release of the minor boy who is accused of fatally hitting two motorbike-riding software engineers in Pune on May 19.

The court declared the remand order as illegal and set it aside.

Since the minor's parents and grandfather are presently behind bars, the custody of the teenager has been given to his paternal aunt, the court was quoted as saying by India Today.

The bench of Justices Bharti Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande, while granting him relief, said that though the accident was unfortunate, he cannot be kept in an observation home, the Indian news channel reported.

The two friends of the 17-year-old teen, whose speeding Porsche car ran over two people leading to their death in Pune, earlier told the cops that the accused was drunk while driving, media reports said.

Eyewitnesses have claimed the car was travelling at 200 km/hr when it hit a two-wheeler carrying Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Kostha, two 24-year-old engineers.

The teen was released on bail within 15 hours under what has been widely alleged as lenient conditions- he was required to write a 300-word essay, assist traffic police for 15 days, and seek treatment for his drinking habit.

Following public outrage, the Juvenile Justice Board revised its order and placed him in an observation home until June 5, pending a decision on the police's request to try the teen as an adult.
