Shivraj Patil no more! Ex-Home Minister and senior Congress leader dies at 90 in Latur; condolences pour in
New Delhi/IBNS: Former Union Home Minister and veteran Congress leader Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 90 on Friday after a brief illness at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra, media reports confirmed.
A prominent figure in national politics for over four decades, Patil is survived by his son Shailash Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, and two granddaughters.
Patil served multiple terms as the Member of Parliament from Latur and held key constitutional roles. He was the Union Home Minister in the UPA government between 2004 and 2008 and earlier served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996.
He later took charge as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
Condolences pour in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on X, recalling Patil’s long years in public life and his commitment to societal welfare.
“Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji… He was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society. My thoughts are with his family in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” Modi posted.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi described Patil’s passing as “an irreparable loss” for the Congress.
“His dedication to public service and his contributions to the nation will always be remembered,” he wrote in a tribute on X.
