'They tried to silence me': PM Modi slams Opposition on day 1 of Parliament's Budget session

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lashed out at the Opposition for its alleged effort to silence him in the first sitting of Parliament after the BJP-led NDA government returned to power in June.

In an unsparing attack on the Opposition, Modi said, "In the inaugural session of the newly formed Parliament, we witnessed unprecedented disruptions. The voice of the government, elected by a mandate of 140 crore Indians, was repeatedly silenced.

"The effort to silence the Prime Minister for four hours cannot have a place in democracy. This disruption hindered the government's ability to fulfil its duties and respond to the people's expectations. Such activities are not acceptable and detrimental to democracy."

Modi referred to the Opposition's ruckus when the Prime Minister delivered his Motion of Thanks in both the Houses of Parliament.

While the Opposition continued with sloganeering during Modi's address in Lok Sabha, most of the anti-BJP parties walked out of Rajya Sabha in the middle of the Prime Minister's speech.

In a message for the Opposition, the Prime Minister on Monday, "We must remember that Parliament is not for any party but the country. It is a sacred institution dedicated to the nation's welfare, not personal interests. We must shed negativity, embrace a constructive approach and honour this Temple of Democracy."

We must remember that Parliament is not for any 'Dal', but for 'Desh'!

It is a sacred institution dedicated to the nation's welfare, not personal interests.

We must shed negativity, embrace a constructive approach and honour this 'Temple of Democracy' .
