Uttar Pradesh: Two die after a stampede breaks out at a temple in Barabanki
At least two people died after a stampede broke out outside the Awsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki on Monday.
According to reports, the incident occurred after an electric wire fell on a tin shed that caused electric shock to several persons.
A large number of devotees had gathered in the temple to mark the third Monday of Sawan month (a holy occasion in the Hindu calendar dedicated to Hindu deity Lord Shiva).
Twenty-nine people were injured in the mishap.
One of the deceased was identified as 22-year-old Prashant from Mubarakpura village under Lonikatra police station, reported India Today.
The identity of the other person is still not known.
Both died when they were being treat at the Trivediganj Community Health Center.
District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi told India Today: "Devotees had gathered here for darshan on the third Monday of Sawan. Some monkeys jumped onto the overhead electric wires, causing them to fall onto the tin shed. As a result, around 19 people received electric shocks. The situation is otherwise under control."
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
This is the second deadly stampede incident that occurred in an Indian temple in two days.
Eyewitnesses confirmed to UNI that the stampede ensued after rumors of electric current spread among the crowd, causing devotees to panic and rush for safety.
In another incident, eight devotees lost their lives and 30 others sustained injuries in a stampede at the renowned Mansadevi Temple in Uttarakhand's Haridwar on Sunday morning.
"The toll has gone up to 8. The injury figure is 30," an official told UNI.
