A woman identified as Kaveri Sinha, an employee of the state Health Department, has alleged that she was attacked by a group of miscreants owing allegiance with BJP at her residence on Friday midnight. The incident reportedly took place in front of the first gate of Badharghat Stadium in the state capital under AD Nagar police station.
According to Kaveri Sinha, a group of alleged miscreants led by members of the 14 Badharghat Mandal of BJP attacked her despite the presence of personnel from AD Nagar police station at the spot. Following the incident, Sinha made an appeal to Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, seeking justice and appropriate action against those responsible.
The alleged attack has triggered concern in the area, with demands for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations.
Sources said that attacked the residence of Kaveri Sinha and vandalized property over an alleged extramarital relationship involving another Health Department employee.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday midnight near Ram Thakur College Road under the jurisdiction of AD Nagar police station. Several persons were said to have sustained injuries, while household property, vehicles including four motorbikes, a car and CCTV cameras were allegedly damaged during the violence.
According to Kaveri Sinha, a divorced Health Department employee, around 40 to 45 people, allegedly linked to a local BJP Mandal, entered her residence near Badharghat Stadium between 11.30 PM to 12 AM along with two ladies , identified as Gayetri Chowdhury and her sister Amita Chowdhury. The alleged attack was reportedly connected to her alleged relationship with fellow Health Department employee Partha Chowdhury.
Sources said Chowdhury's wife had earlier lodged complaints regarding the alleged relationship at Agartala Women police station and Amtali police station. The dispute had reportedly been addressed through mediation efforts in the past, and both employees were transferred to separate workplaces in an attempt to ease tensions.
Kaveri Sinha claimed that Partha Chowdhury had come to her residence on Friday night. After his wife reportedly informed the police, officers allegedly arrived at the house along with local political activists. Sinha said she was away attending her daughter's private tuition class when she received a phone call from Chowdhury's mobile phone asking her to return home.
Upon reaching the house, Sinha alleged that Chowdhury was being assaulted by the crowd. She claimed that when she and her elderly mother tried to intervene, they too were attacked. Other family members and relatives who arrived after learning about the incident were also allegedly assaulted.
The woman further alleged that police personnel present at the scene failed to stop the violence or provide protection to the occupants of the house. She also levelled serious allegations against a woman Sub-Inspector (SI), identified as Sushmita Debnath, claiming that after some family members took shelter inside a room, the officer allegedly allowed the attackers to enter the house again, resulting in further assaults. Sinha also claimed that police officer Sushmita Debnath was severely abused her and her elderly mother.
According to the complainants, four to five people, including Partha Chowdhury, Kaberi Sinha and her mother and relatives, sustained injuries and were later taken to a hospital for treatment.
The family also alleged extensive damage to their property. They claimed that a car, 4 motorcycles, CCTV cameras, household furniture and other valuables were vandalized during the incident. The exact extent of the financial loss has not yet been officially assessed.
The incident sparked tension in the locality, prompting the deployment of additional police personnel from AD Nagar police station to maintain law and order.
The episode has also taken on a political dimension, with allegations and counter-allegations regarding the involvement of local BJP functionaries. Some local reports suggested that the violence may have arisen from an internal dispute among BJP supporters. However, no official statement has been issued by BJP leaders in connection with the allegations.
Police have not yet released a detailed official account of the incident or confirmed the allegations of assault, vandalism and police inaction. An investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any offences were committed.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the handling of sensitive personal disputes, allegations of mob vigilantism, and the role of law enforcement in preventing violence during domestic and family-related conflicts.
