Uttarakhand to become first state to implement UCC today
Dehradun/IBNS: Uttarakhand will become the first Indian state to implement Uniform Civil Code on Monday, media reports said.
Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will officially launch the UCC portal.
Dhami will also issue a notification to mark the adoption of civil code.
"The UCC's implementation represents a significant milestone, making the Himalayan state the first in the country to adopt this progressive legislation since Independence," said Dhami as quoted by The Times of India.
After he was re-elected, CM Dhami had formed an expert committee to draft a law.
The expert committee, which was headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash, was established on May 27, 2022.
The committee had submitted its report in February 2024.
The UCC addresses societal issues like marriage, divorce, live-in relationships ensuring equal property rights and child rights.
Slamming the implementation, Congress MP Kumari Selja told ANI, "People's rights should not be snatched away. Everyone is equal, but our constitution also talks about protecting the rights of everyone. The government tries to divide people, and this is also a part of that."
