Lucky Ali 'apologises' after calling Javed Akhtar 'ugly as f**k', sparks fresh controversy
Singer Lucky Ali has stirred up another round of controversy days after calling veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar “ugly as f**k” in response to a viral video of the writer’s remarks on religion and society.

The O Sanam hitmaker took to social media on Wednesday to share what appeared to be a clarification, though it read more like a pointed reiteration of his earlier criticism.
Taking to X, Ali wrote: “What I meant was that arrogance is ugly... it was a mistaken communique on my part... monsters may have feelings too and I apologise if I hurt anyone’s monstrosity...”

The post, couched in sarcasm, came two days after the singer lashed out at Akhtar over his comments urging Hindus “not to become like Muslims.”
What triggered the row?
A video from a recent event showed Javed Akhtar discussing freedom of expression in Indian cinema. Citing a scene from the 1975 classic Sholay, which he co-wrote, Akhtar reflected on how sensitivities have changed over time.
“In Sholay, Dharmendra hides behind Shiv ji’s murti and speaks, and Hema Malini thinks Shiv ji is talking to her. Could a scene like that be written today? No,” he said, adding, “As a matter of fact, I once told Raju Hirani, ‘Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like yourself. You are becoming like Muslims. It’s a tragedy.’”
The clip sparked widespread debate online, with many criticising Akhtar’s choice of words. Lucky Ali’s reaction, however, drew equal attention. He commented on an X post carrying the video, writing:
“Don’t become like Javed Akhtar. Never original and ugly as f**k.”
Don’t become like javed akhtar, never original and ugly as fack…

Ali’s comment divided users across platforms- while some defended his right to call out hypocrisy, others accused him of using derogatory language and disrespecting a senior figure in the industry.
His latest post, framed as an apology, did little to calm the conversation. Many interpreted it as a backhanded jibe rather than a genuine expression of regret.
Lucky Ali, son of late comedian Mehmood, is celebrated for his soulful hits such as O Sanam, Ek Pal Ka Jeena, and Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai.
Known for his reclusive nature and spiritual outlook, Ali has seldom been involved in controversies.
Javed Akhtar, on the other hand, remains one of Indian cinema’s most decorated and outspoken writers, having co-written classics like Sholay and Deewar. He is also known for his candid commentary on social and political issues.
So far, Javed Akhtar has not responded publicly to Lucky Ali’s remarks.
