Australia's 2021 T20World Cup hero Matthew Wade quits international cricket
Australian explosive wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade, who had led the side occasionally in the limited format of the game, on Tuesday announced his retirement from international cricket.
In his 13-year career, Wade played 36 Tests as well as 189 limited-overs matches for Australia.
Despite deciding to end his international career, the cricketer would continue to play white-ball cricket for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes and in some overseas leagues.
Apart from continuing to play in domestic cricket, Wade announced he will be assigned as Australia's wicketkeeping and fielding coach for next month's T20 series against Pakistan.
Wade played a decisive role in Australia's T20 World Cup victory in 2021.
He represented the national T20 squads in 2022 and 2024 World Cups.
"I'm officially retiring," Wade, who called time on his first-class career at the end of last summer, told cricket.com.au.
"It's been an ongoing discussion for pretty much every tour or every World Cup that I've been on in the last three or four years," he said.
"It's been a really fluent conversation that I've had with George (Bailey, chief selector) and Ronnie (coach Andrew McDonald) over the last six months or since the last World Cup finished," Wade said.
"Even leading into the last World Cup, we've been really open and had really great communication around where I'm at with my career," he said.
Wade made his T20 debut in 2011-12 summer.
In his career, Wade competed with Brad Haddin,ex-Test captain Tim Paine and Peter Nevill across all formats for the position behind the wickets.
