Shubman Gill steers India to a four-wicket win over England in first ODI
Nagpur/IBNS: India batter Shubman Gill may have missed his century by 13 runs but ensured India's comfortable victory over England in the first One Day International (ODI) when he departed for 87 in Nagpur on Thursday.
India continued their winning momentum they had brought from the T20I series with a convincing four-wicket victory in the first of the three ODIs.
Chasing 249, India lost early wickets in the form of Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and skipper Rohit Sharma (2) but Gill (87 from 96 balls) was joined by Shreyas Iyer, who counter-attacked the English bowlers to stitch a partnership of 94 runs.
Iyer slammed a quick 59 from only 36 balls (9 fours and 2 sixes) until he was dismissed leg before wicket by Jacob Bethell.
Gill was then joined by allrounder Axar Patel, who followed Iyer's footsteps in slamming an aggressive 52 from 47 balls.
Earlier, India bowled out England for 248 in 47.4 overs.
England captain Jos Buttler (52) and Bethell (51) were the top scorers for the visitors who were put under pressure by Ravindra Jadeja (3/26) and debutant Harshit Rana (3/53) in the afternoon.
