A senior Journalist attacked again in Boxanagar; widespread condemnation across state
Incidents of attacks on journalists continue unabated in the state, irrespective of the ruling regime. During the Left Front era, the killing of two promising journalists and widespread violence had raised concerns among the media fraternity. Many had hoped that a change in government in 2018 would strengthen the safety and security of journalists. Although initiatives such as journalist allowances, an increase in the number of accredited journalists, and distribution of press jackets were introduced, strict measures to ensure journalists’ safety remain largely inadequate.
Despite repeated assurances from the state leadership about implementing a “zero tolerance” policy against crime and mafia activities, little effective action has been seen on the ground. Reports of attacks on journalists frequently surface in both mainstream media and social media platforms across the state.
A glaring example is the repeated targeting of the President of the Boxanagar Press Club, Prabhat Ghosh, who has now been attacked twice within a month. In an earlier incident, one Manik Das had allegedly assaulted him publicly at Uttar Kalamchoura Chatian Tilla Chowmuhani, leaving him bleeding with head injuries. Following pressure from journalist bodies, police arrested the accused, who remains in custody.
However, before the matter could settle, Prabhat Ghosh was once again attacked on Wednesday. The occasion was the Boishakhi Mela at Kamalnagar market. Ghosh had attended the fair to collect news and, after completing his work, was returning home when a group of miscreants allegedly ambushed him near Anandnagar Chowmuhani. The attackers reportedly vandalized his motorcycle and struck him on the head with sticks, causing severe injuries.
Passersby rushed the injured journalist to Kamalnagar Primary Health Centre, where he received initial treatment. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to GB Hospital in Agartala, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
The incident has triggered strong condemnation from journalists and media organizations across the state. In particular, Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar condemned the attack and urged top administrative officials to ensure immediate punishment for those responsible.
On Thursday at around 2 PM, working journalists from five press clubs—Boxanagar, Sonamura, Jampuijala, Bishalgarh, and the District Press Club—submitted a deputation to the SP of Sepahijala district, Bijoy Debbarma. They demanded immediate arrest of the accused within 24 hours, providing names and details of those allegedly involved.
The journalists warned that failure to act promptly would lead to democratic protests in the coming days. Responding to the deputation, the SP assured that a proper investigation would be conducted and legal action would be taken against the culprits at the earliest.
