The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) strongly condemned the alleged killing of Jalil Miah at Ghila Tali in Teliamura under Khowai district and demanded that those responsible be identified and given exemplary punishment. The organisation also urged the government to stand by the victim’s family and take effective measures to restore peace and law and order in the area.
Addressing a press conference at Krishak Bhavan in Agartala on Sunday evening, AIKS state president Aghor Debbarma, secretary Ratan Das and state secretariat member Siddikur Rahman said that Jalil Miah was attacked by a group of around ten people armed with iron rods and sticks. His wife reportedly rushed to the spot after hearing his cries, but the attackers allegedly continued beating him in front of her, resulting in his death. It was further alleged that Jalil was subjected to brutal assaults, including injuries to his private parts, and that he pleaded for his life before the attackers.
The AIKS alleged that cash, mobile phones and other belongings were also taken from the family and that family members were subjected to physical abuse.
The organization said the bereaved family is extremely poor and demanded that the government provide necessary assistance to ensure their livelihood. Jalil is survived by his four-year-old daughter.
Expressing concern over the alleged rise in violence and communal tension in the state, the AIKS leaders questioned the emergence of what it described as a culture of violence in Tripura. The organization urged the administration to take firm and impartial action against those responsible and restore an atmosphere of peace, security and social harmony.
The speakers said ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens is the responsibility of the government and called upon the administration to play a more sensitive and proactive role in protecting people’s fundamental and constitutional rights.
Following the incident, AIKS state secretary Ratan Das, state president Aghor Debbarma, MLA Nirmal Biswas and Teliamura divisional secretary Subash Nath, along with others, visited Jalil’s residence and met the bereaved family.
