Attack on Parliamentary team at NC Nagar, 3 vehicles ransacked, one detained
As scheduled three Parliamentary teams comprising MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from Left parties and Congress arrived at the state capital on Friday and teams as per schedules visited many post-poll violence affected areas of the state along with state leaders and has also faced massive sloganeering and attack at Nehalchandra Nagar area of Bishalgarh subdivision on Friday evening and cut short visit in violence hit areas.
The teams are visiting the state for two days till March to stay in the state till March 11 after which it will submit a report and the issue will be raised in Parliament which convenes from March 13.
CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said the delegation has been split into three teams for visiting the affected districts of West Tripura, Sepahijala and Khowai.
As many as 1,200 incidents of post violence were reported in the state ever since the announcement of Assembly election results on March 2, Chaudhury claimed.
The exact number of injured as well as the extent of damage could not be ascertained because countless incidents took place since the announcement of election results. A process has already been initiated to compile an authentic report on the post-poll violence, said Chaudhury.
While, when the team of parliamentarian led by CPI(M) MP(RS) Elaram Karim and Congress MP(LS) Abdul Khalique accompanied by CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, Pradesh Congress president and MLA Birajit Sinha, Congress MLA Gopal Roy, AICC in-charge for Tripura Dr Ajoy Kumar and few other leaders visited Nehalchandra Nagar area under Bishalgarh subdivision, specially, when the started visited violence affected areas of local market, a large group of people gathered at the spot and started sloganeering against the visit of the team and started stone pelting targeting the vehicles of the team.
Later, a large number of security forces rushed to the spot along with senior police officials and rescued the parliamentary team.
CPI(M) state committee through a press statement strongly condemned the incident and claimed that rules of law totally deteriorated in the state and even the parliamentary team is not safe in the state.
Congress also condemned the incident and claimed that hooliganism of BJP workers is at the peak and nobody is safe in the state.
CPI(M) state secretary and MLA Jitendra Chaudhury on Friday night said that the parliamentary team has been compelled to suspend its residual outdoor programs scheduled for Saturday in the face of a gruesome attack unleashed upon them at Nehalchandra Nagar Bazar (Bishalgarh) on Friday evening.
Similar provocations were also done in other places too, he said.
The MPs and the accompanying Congress and CPI(M) leaders quickly left from the place and escaped the major attack. Local BJP workers also obstructed the visiting parliamentary delegation at Mohanpur under West Tripura district.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh condemning the incident tweeted : “A delegation of Congress leaders was attacked by BJP goons today in Bishalgarh and Mohanpur in Tripura. Police accompanying the delegation did nothing. And tomorrow BJP is having a victory rally there. Victory of party-sponsored violence.”
The members of the parliamentary team include, P.R. Natarajan, Ranjita Ranjan, A.A Rahim, Abdul Khalique (Lok Sabha) and Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Vinay Viswam, and Elaram Karim (Rajya Sabha).
Chaudhury also said many people fled from their homes and took shelter in the jungle, different places and outside the state to save their lives, he said. Some people, following the violent incidents were detained for a while but were let off later, he told the media.
Meanwhile, Tripura police through a press statement said that “a delegation of MP, MLAs and local leaders made an unscheduled visit to the NC Nagar, Bishalagarh today. During their visit some sloganeering was done. The accompanying police escort team responded quickly and rescued the delegation safely.”
Police also said that senior police officials rushed to the spot and no injury to any persons has been reported locally and damage of 2 to 3 vehicles has been reported. One suspect has been detained and raids are on to identify and arrest other miscreants, said police.
