Tension has gripped Kailashahar after a group of Bangladeshi thieves cut through the India–Bangladesh international border fence and attempted to commit theft in the Baulapasha area on Saturday night.

The incident has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of border security and the role of Kailashahar police under Unakoti district.

Baulapasha, located barely 200 meters from Kailashahar police station and adjacent to the international border’s barbed-wire fencing, became the target when the Bangladeshi intruders reportedly entered the locality after cutting the fence. According to residents, the Bangladeshi thieves tried to steal goats and cows from several houses. When alerted by noise, the owners raised an alarm, causing thieves to flee.

Thieves then entered a grocery shop in the area in an attempt to steal goods. Locals, who had remained alert, quickly noticed the move and began shouting, forcing the thieves to retreat toward the Bangladesh side of the border. Residents claimed the intruders hurled obscene abuses from across the border after escaping.

Locals also alleged that the thieves were armed with sharp weapons, including knives. Their vigilance prevented any theft from taking place, though the incident has sparked widespread concern.

When news of the incident spread on social media on Sunday afternoon, residents of the entire Baulapasha area expressed anger over what they describe as police inaction. They further claimed that such incidents recur annually during this season, with border intruders frequently attempting theft by cutting the fencing.

Despite a BSF camp located in Baulapasha and the Kailashahar police station being in close proximity, the ease with which the intruders reportedly breached the border fence has raised security concerns. Residents have demanded stricter patrolling and immediate corrective measures to ensure the safety of the locality.
