A long-standing land dispute between two brothers ended in tragedy on Friday evening when both men lost their lives in a violent altercation at Phultali village under Ward No. 4 of Chandipur constituency in Kailashahar of Unakoti district.
Sources said that the deceased have been identified as Mayur Chandra Sinha, a mason by profession, and his younger brother Neeldhwaj Sinha, retired Army personnel. The brothers had reportedly been involved in a prolonged dispute over family land.
Residents alleged that on Friday evening, Neeldhwaj went to his elder brother’s house and attacked him with a knife. During the ensuing confrontation, Mayur also retaliated, resulting in both brothers sustaining fatal injuries. They reportedly died on the spot.
Mayur’s son was also seriously injured during the incident and was rushed to Unakoti District Hospital in Kailashahar for treatment.
Upon receiving information about the incident, personnel from Kailashahar police station rushed to the scene. Unakoti Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudhambika R., along with other senior police officials and a dog squad team, also visited the spot and launched an investigation. Police have begun questioning family members and gathering evidence related to the case.
The bodies of the two deceased were later sent to Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Speaking to reporters, Mridul Sinha, Pradhan of Phultali Gram Panchayat, confirmed the incident and said the dispute over land had been continuing for a long time before it escalated into the deadly clash. Police are investigating the matter further.
