CPIM demands rehabilitation before eviction of Katakhal bank residents in Agartala
The Sadar Sub-Divisional Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) on Monday submitted a deputation to the Additional Sub-Divisional Magistrate, raising concerns over the eviction of families residing along the banks of Katakhal.
The party alleged that despite efforts, its representatives could not meet the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and instead placed their demands before the Additional SDM. In the deputation, CPIM urged the administration to halt the eviction drive until proper rehabilitation measures are ensured for the economically vulnerable families who have been served eviction notices.
Notably, the administration had earlier issued notices to alleged illegal occupants along the Katakhal bank, directing them to vacate the area, with Sunday set as the final deadline.
Tensions escalated on Sunday when residents of the area staged a road blockade near Abhoynagar Bridge, protesting against the eviction and demanding adequate rehabilitation arrangements. Extending support to the affected families, the CPIM Sadar Sub-Divisional Committee formally took up the matter with the administration through Monday’s deputation.
