Dispute over family issues: Police constable attempts self-immolation
A police constable of the Crime Branch allegedly attempted self-immolation over family disputes at his in-laws’ house in Naba Shantiganj village of Gholaghati under Sepahijala district on Saturday, creating panic among local residents.
Following the incident, the injured constable, Mithun Dey, posted at the Tripura Police Crime Branch (TPCB) in Agartala, was immediately shifted to GB Hospital by his relatives and firefighters.
Speaking to media persons at GB Hospital, the wife of the injured constable alleged that she and her son were regularly tortured by her husband whenever she failed to meet his repeated demands for money.
She claimed that Mithun Dey is a habitual gambler who lost most of his property to debts due to gambling and also spends his monthly salary on it. Losing money in gambling, he would often assault his wife and demand money from her and their only son, she added.
She further alleged that, unable to bear his torture, she and her son had recently taken shelter at her maternal uncle’s house in Gholaghati after leaving their home in the Nanditilla area under the AD Nagar police station in Agartala.
However, on Saturday, Mithun Dey suddenly arrived at her uncle’s house and, after a heated altercation with his wife, poured kerosene on himself and set himself on fire. As a result, Mithun suffered severe burn injuries and is currently admitted to GB Hospital in critical condition.
Meanwhile, officers from the AD Nagar police station stated that they had earlier received a complaint from the victim woman and had tried to resolve the family dispute amicably. However, following Saturday’s incident, the police have launched an investigation to uncover the exact circumstances leading to the self-immolation attempt.
