Dumping of construction materials by Khowai Municipality causes frequent road mishaps
At a time when municipal bodies across the state are urging citizens not to store construction materials along roadsides, alleged negligence by Khowai Municipal authorities has resulted in repeated road accidents in the Lalcherra area of Khowai. On Thursday morning, yet another mishap occurred when a passenger bus skidded due to construction materials dumped beside the road by the municipal authorities.
According to locals, the Khowai Municipality has been storing construction materials along the main road for several days, creating inconvenience and posing serious hazards for commuters. Sand and other materials kept on the roadside have caused multiple vehicles to slip, leading to repeated accidents.
Sources said that on Thursday at around 7 AM, a passenger bus lost control while passing through the Lalcherra stretch where the materials had been dumped for government work. The bus skidded, overturned, and came to a halt near a roadside house. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported; only a few passengers sustained minor injuries.
Local residents rushed to the spot immediately after hearing the crash. Police later arrived, and due to the bus blocking the road during peak morning hours, commuters faced severe inconvenience. The vehicle was eventually removed with the help of a crane, allowing traffic to resume.
Residents allege that the continuous storage of construction materials beside the road has significantly increased the risk of accidents. Over the past few days, several vehicles reportedly got stuck or slipped due to the materials obstructing the main road.
Blaming the authorities for negligence, locals stated that the roadside dumping poses a serious threat to public safety. They demanded immediate removal of the construction materials and urged the authorities to complete the work without causing suffering to residents and commuters.
“If a major accident occurs, who will take responsibility?” questioned the aggrieved locals, calling for urgent corrective action.
