In a major anti-narcotics success, police at the Churaibari check post under North Tripura district seized a large quantity of dry Cannabis (Ganja) and arrest of five drug peddelers including four women from Bihar state during the early hours of Friday. The seizure took place during routine vehicle checking on National Highway-8 at the Assam-Agartala route.

Police intercepted an Alto car bearing registration number TR05B-0314, and the search that followed exposed an inter-state drug trafficking network.

During search, police recovered 24 packets of dry ganja—big and small—from the bags and bodies of four women posing as passengers and from multiple hidden chambers inside the vehicle. The total weight of the seized contraband is around 21 kilograms, with an estimated black-market value of Rs 6 lakh.

OC of Churabari police station, Debabrata Biswas said that four arrested women are residents of Bihar and were identified as Mongali Devi (28), Kavita Devi (35), Anita Devi (38) and Sutur Kumari (30)

Accused car’s driver, Sandip Malakar (30) from Dharmanagar’ Sripur village in North Tripura district, was also arrested.

OC Debabrata Biswas said the packets were cleverly concealed beneath luggage, inside dashboard pockets, hidden cavities, and under the car seats and bodies of the four arrested women. Initially, the suspects appeared to be regular passengers, but inconsistencies in their behaviour during checking prompted a deeper search.

“The ganja was expertly hidden in the women’s bags, bodies and in several concealed parts of the Alto vehicle. All five detainees are clearly linked to the contraband inter-state trafficking network,” the OC said.

Police sources revealed that the gang had procured the Ganja from the Ambassa and planned to smuggle it to Bihar. Preliminary investigation suggests that this route has been used for trafficking operations.

A case has already been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Churaibari police station and the arrested individuals were produced before the Dharmanagar District & Sessions Court and court sent all four women into jail custody till December 20th next and accused driver sent to police remand for three days for interrogation.
