Govt to consider proposals of MLAs to overcome flood crisis, Nath
All the constructive proposals and suggestions placed by the ruling and opposition members in the house, the government will consider these with priority, said Parliamentary Affairs and Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath at state assembly on Wednesday.
In the first day of Monsoon session of Tripura assembly, Nath replying the public attention notices of opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman over the devastating flood in the state and relief operations said that in the catastrophic flood across Tripura from August 19 to 23rd last, out of 12 rivers of the state except river Juri in North Tripura district flowed over danger levels.
In the wake of the recent flood till now 32 persons have lost their lives, two are injured and one person is missing in this flood, said Nath and added that about 17 lakh people of the state were affected in the flood.
The government has opened 821 relief camps, providing shelter to around 1.49 lakh persons. The administration provided necessary relief including food, drinking water and medical help etc. To prevent spreading of any water-borne disease, regular cleaning of toilets, bleaching, disinfectant spraying etc. are being ensured in the shelter houses, said Nath
As per the preliminary assessment of the damage to the properties, crops and infrastructures due to the heavy rains, floods and landslides amounted to around Rs 14,247 crore, which could rise further after field assessment, said Nath
Over 17 lakh people were affected in the entire state, which has witnessed unprecedented rain and devastating floods since August 19. Landslides occurred in a record number of 2,066 places and many important highways, including the National Highway- 8, the lifeline of Tripura, have been damaged
Several teams of the National and State Disaster Response Force along with 500 volunteers of Civil Defence and Apada Mitra are still engaged in relief and rescue operations, said Nath, adding that 3 helicopters of the Indian Air Force pressed into action for relief operations. Till date, Rs. 30 crore has been donated in Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury appreciated the efforts of opposition parties for their constructive role to overcome the severe crisis situation of the state.
Labourers have been badly affected due to recent floods, resulting in loss of livelihood and income to them. The Labour Department has decided to provide one-time financial assistance to registered construction workers at Rs.4000 per worker from the labour cess. This decision will benefit 42,981 registered construction workers in the state and provide them an amount of Rs. 17.20 crore, said Nath.
Speaking in the discussion, leader of opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chaudhury placed various proposals to over =come from flood crisis including declaration of state’s disaster as national disaster, to assess the damages formation of a special task force, government job to next kin of flood affected victims, 200 mandays under MGNREGA with daily wages of Rs.600 etc.
