IMD forecasts week long rain, thunderstorms across Tripura; Heavy rainfall warning issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Agartala station has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across Tripura over the next seven days, with warnings of heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds in several districts.
According to the evening weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Agartala on Friday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely at most places across the state from May 1 to May 3. During this period, heavy rainfall ranging between 7–11 cm is expected at isolated locations, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph.
The IMD further stated that similar weather conditions will persist on May 4, with rainfall likely at many places. However, heavy rainfall is expected to be confined to North Tripura, Unakoti, and Dhalai districts, along with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations.
From May 5 to May 7, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to continue at many places across Tripura, with occasional thunderstorms and lightning activity, though no specific heavy rainfall warning has been issued for these days.
The IMD has predicted that maximum temperatures will remain 4–6 degrees Celsius below normal for the next 2–3 days, followed by a gradual rise. Minimum temperatures are also expected to stay 2–4 degrees Celsius below normal initially before returning to near-normal levels.
The weather department has warned that heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, temporary disruption of municipal services, and traffic issues due to waterlogging and reduced visibility. Thunderstorms and gusty winds may cause damage to weak structures, uprooting of trees, and disruption of power and communication lines.
According to IMD Agartala Station Director, Dr. Partha Roy, the maximum temperature on Friday was recorded at 25.8 degrees Celsius, which is below normal for first part of May and minimum temperature recorded 22.9 degrees Celsius.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms, and stay indoors during lightning activity. Farmers are also urged to suspend agricultural operations during adverse weather conditions.
