As cold winds keep the mercury below normal levels, the minimum temperature in Tripura has begun to drop steadily since the official onset of winter on December 1.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala station, has predicted that cold wave conditions will sweep across Tripura along with the entire Northeast region in the coming days. With the progress of December, temperatures are expected to fall further across the state.

According to IMD Agartala Station Director, Dr. Partha Roy, the minimum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 12.4 degrees Celsius, which is normal for the first part of December. He said dry weather is very likely to prevail over the districts of Tripura, accompanied by shallow to moderate fog during the early morning hours, while temperatures are expected to gradually decrease.

Although the maximum temperature is currently within the normal range, it is likely to decline in the coming days as December progresses. The primary reason for the severe cold in the days ahead will be a steady decrease in the minimum temperature, IMD officials added.

The Met Department has further stated that cold wave conditions are expected to begin from the second week of December and continue until January 2026.

During the next week, the minimum temperature may hover between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. Dense fog is also expected to reduce visibility during the early morning hours in Tripura as well as in neighbouring Bangladesh and other parts of the Northeast.
