President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday announced a series of appointments and transfers of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several states and Union Territories.

According to an official communiqué, Shiv Pratap Shukla, the current Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed as the Governor of Telangana.

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, Jishnu Dev Varma, who is currently serving as the Governor of Telangana, has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Senior BJP leader and former Bihar minister Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the Governor of Nagaland, while retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.

Meanwhile, R. N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the Governor of West Bengal following the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose. The President has accepted Bose’s resignation.

Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the Governor of Kerala, will discharge the functions of the Governor of Tamil Nadu until further arrangements are made.

Among the changes in Union Territories, Kavinder Gupta, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. V. K. Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has been appointed as the Lt Governor of Ladakh.

Former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

According to the official announcement, the appointments will take effect from the dates the appointees assume charge of their respective offices.

Earlier on Thursday, in an unprecedented development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal, Governor C. V. Ananda Bose resigned from his post.

In a statement shared on her X handle, Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, said she had been informed about Bose’s resignation by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and that R. N. Ravi would be appointed as the new Governor of the state.

“I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Shri C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal. The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections,” Banerjee said.
