Kolkata Doctor's rape-murder case: Tripura doctors’ protest
The members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Tripura State branch and young doctors of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Hospital and doctors of ILS Hospital strongly condemned the rape and murder of a female doctor on duty at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and demanded stringent punishment for culprits.
In a press statement jointly issued by the IMA’s Secretary and President Dr Basaab Ghosh and Dr Sanjib Kr. Debbarma said that the IMA was shocked by the terrible crime that took place on August 9, 2024, with one of the lady Post-graduate students in the said Kolkata-based medical college. The on-duty lady doctor was raped and murdered. The IMA demands swift action and capital punishment of the culprits involved in the heinous incident after conducting an inquiry by the competent authority.
The association extends its full support and solidarity to the movement of doctors launched by the doctors and medical students of the AGMC and GBP Hospital in Agartala, Tripura Medical College (TMC) and ILS Hospital condemning the infernal incident that took away the life of an innocent doctor at her workplace. The IMA, Tripura branch also placed demands and suggested for quick implementation of some safety and precaution measures to prevent and avoid this sort of incident including a total security measure should be ensured in those sensitive places as in today’s context it has become a common phenomenon in society, adequate CCTV cameras with quality picture capability have to be installed in every possible place after discussing with hospital staff including doctors, teachers, and students.
They also demanded that there should be a dedicated CC camera monitoring office for 7x24 in the security room and surveillance by the security officials to work as a whistleblower to any unusual movement and in sensitive hospitals where many people come for medical matters and where there is direct contact between doctors and people, adequate security measures should be taken to ensure the safety and security of the staff, medical students, nurses, paramedics, and doctors.
