Massive group clash at Tilla Bazar among rival contractor factions; at least 17 injured
Clash over govt contracts, 2 rounds fired
A violent clash erupted between rival contractor groups—locally known as “negotiation mafias”—at Tilla Bazar under the Irani police station in Kailashahar on Tuesday evening, reportedly over disputes related to government tender allocations. At least five persons sustained serious injuries, while 10–12 others suffered minor injuries.
According to sources, both groups, allegedly enjoying political patronage from the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, engaged in a fierce confrontation that soon escalated into a full-blown street battle. During the clash, one group reportedly fired two rounds, prompting immediate intervention by police personnel who rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Sources further claimed that mounting tensions stemmed from recent government contract awards. Contractor Abdul Mannan, brother-in-law of BJP leader Mofasar Ali, is alleged to have secured around 10 major tenders through political influence, triggering resentment among rival groups.
The rivalry between these factions in Kailashahar under the Unakoti district had been simmering for months. However, on Tuesday evening, verbal altercations at Tilla Bazar quickly escalated into violent confrontations, during which firearms were reportedly used.
Police sources confirmed that five critically injured persons from both groups were admitted to Unakoti District Hospital. Additionally, 10–12 others with minor injuries were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities stated that the situation has since been brought under control, with a substantial deployment of security forces in the Tilla Bazar area to prevent further escalation.
