A nationwide one-day strike in the pharmaceutical sector was observed across Tripura on Wednesday in protest against the unregulated functioning of online pharmacies and alleged exploitative pricing policies by large corporate pharmacy chains.

The strike, supported by the All-Tripura Chemists and Druggists Association, had a significant impact throughout the state. Sources said that most medicine shops remained closed, except in areas surrounding Hapania Hospital in Agartala and parts of Kamalpur. However, as an emergency arrangement, at least one pharmacy near every hospital and Primary Health Centre remained open to ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines.

In support of the nationwide programme, members of the association gathered near IGM Hospital in Agartala during the morning hours. The protesters also submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the District Magistrate of West Tripura district.

The agitating traders alleged that illegal e-pharmacies and heavy discount schemes offered by large corporate companies have severely threatened the livelihood of nearly 1.24 million chemists and drug traders, along with around 50 million people dependent on the sector across the country. The nationwide strike was called by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists, citing alleged government inaction on the issue.

Among the key demands raised by the protesters were the withdrawal of the temporary COVID-era notification GSR 220(E), cancellation of the e-pharmacy notification GSR 817(E), and the creation of a level playing field by stopping unfair deep discount practices adopted by major corporate pharmacy chains.
