NCPCR Honours Khowai district as best performing district
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) recognised the Khowai as the best-performing district in Tripura for implementing the Joint Action Plan on “Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse among Children and Illicit Trafficking.”
In a glittering ceremony on June 30, organized to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Minister of State (Home) Nityananda Rai conferred an accolade to Chandni Chandran, District Magistrate & Collector of Khowai district leading the administration in achieving this success at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on Sunday. She was given a beautiful memento and citation as recognition of her outstanding performance. The accolade from NCPCR not only recognizes Khowai’s exemplary work but also sets a standard for other districts to emulate in the fight against drugs and human trafficking in safeguarding and protecting child rights, said the MoS while appreciating her performance. Apart from MoS (Home), a host of guests and dignitaries including Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Priyank Kanongo, Member Secretary Rupali Singh Banerjee, Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau Satyanarayan Pradhan were present at the occasion.
Khowai district was adjudicated as the best-performing district as it has done remarkably well in all key parameters of program implementation like installation of CCTV cameras in big drug stores, activities of Pravari Clubs in schools, and implementation of the COTPA Act with robust enforcement. Chief Minister Prof (Dr) Manik Saha launched a child welfare scheme in November 2023, aiming at preventing child marriage and reintegrating victims into the education system. The scheme, called CHESTA (Child Marriage Elimination through Sensitization, Tracking, and Awareness), received widespread admiration for its inclusive approach to controlling drug abuse, reducing human trafficking, and also supporting affected girls.
Chadni Chandran paved the way for the project called "Women Education and Child Marriage", to get rid of child marriage or underage marriage as a social evil.
