Notorious gang strikes again in border Golchakkar area: One injured, 4 arrested, several bikes ransacked
Situation now under control after group clash; heavy security deployed with RAF and TSR
Tension gripped the border Golchakkar area of Agartala on Sunday night after a group of miscreants allegedly abducted and assaulted a youth, triggering widespread panic, clashes, and vandalism in the locality.
Meanwhile, the West Agartala police station arrested four accused persons in connection with the incident that took place in the border Golchakkar area on Sunday night.
Police did not reveal their names for the interest of investigation and speaking with media persons, Additional SP(Urban) Dhruba Nath said that on Sunday night, tension spread in the border Golchakkar area over a simple argument between two people. Additional forces including RAF and TSR deployed at night.
He also said that this tension and fight was not due to any kind of communal flareup but due to a simple incident. Apart from Additional SP Dhruv Nath, OC of West Police Station Rana Chatterjee was present in the press briefing.
According to reports, the victim, identified as Irfan Kazi, was forcibly taken away by a gang from near a local shop. Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived in a car and several motorbikes, dragged Irfan inside the vehicle, and sped away. Panic spread quickly through the neighbourhood before police could reach the spot.
“Irfan was taken right in front of us — they beat him mercilessly. How long will this continue? Why is there no protection?” one local resident said angrily.
One of Irfan’s friends, who was present during the attack, rushed to inform his family and neighbours. Soon after, dozens of locals and relatives arrived at the spot and managed to rescue Irfan in a critical condition. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
However, the situation quickly spiralled out of control. A section of locals began ransacking bikes, scooters, and shops, attacking others amid the chaos. Confusion and fear gripped the streets as residents struggled to identify who belonged to which group in the darkness.
Allegedly, a miscreant named Arghajit Das took Irfan to a nearby shop, locked the door from inside, and brutally assaulted him. Locals claim that the gang involved is part of a notorious group that has been operating in the area for a long time.
Residents further alleged that illegal activities — including drug dealing, smuggling, extortion, and land brokerage — have been continuing under the influence of a local BJP booth president, Amal Das, while authorities “turned a blind eye.”
“Just a few days ago, a pistol was pointed at a shop and money was taken. Even after filing a complaint, no action was taken,” said one resident.
As panic spread, police and security forces swung into action. West District Superintendent of Police, the Sadar SDPO, OC of West Agartala Police Station, and the Additional SP rushed to the spot. TSR and Rapid Action Force (RAF) units were deployed to restore order and prevent further violence.
Later, Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and local MLA Dipak Majumdar arrived at the scene and reviewed the situation with senior officers. He instructed authorities to take strict measures to maintain peace and law and order in the entire area.
Meanwhile, Irfan’s family has filed a written complaint at the West Agartala Police Station, naming six individuals allegedly involved in the kidnapping and assault.
