Offensive social media remarks spark outrage; FIR filed against a youth in Kadamtala
Tension gripped in the Dharmanagar subdivision of North Tripura district after a youth allegedly made derogatory remarks about the ‘Malakar’ community on social media. Members of the community have filed an FIR against the accused at Kadamtala police station on Saturday.
Sources said that the accused youth was identified as Sribas Deb (33), is currently reported to be in Bangalore.
According to reports, the organization ‘Uttaranchal Malakar Samaj’ lodged the complaint after the youth allegedly posted offensive and abusive comments targeting the Malakar community during a live session on Facebook last Friday. The accused is the son of late Bipul Deb and a resident of Ward No. 3 in Bishnupur village under Kadamtala police station.
The secretary of the Uttaranchal Malakar Samaj, Chittaranjan Malakar stated that the incident has deeply hurt the sentiments of the entire community. Following the incident, members of the Malakar community from Dharmanagar and surrounding areas gathered in Maheshpur to discuss the matter. Subsequently, they collectively decided to file a formal complaint with the police.
The complainants have submitted all relevant documents and evidence to the police and have urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure strict legal action against the accused.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over divisive and insensitive content on social media, especially at a time when society continues to move away from caste-based discrimination through sustained efforts over the years.
