OTPC signs MoU with APDCL for development of 250 MW battery energy storage system in Assam
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between ONGC Tripura power Company Limited (OTPC) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) at Guwahati on Wednesday , said Sanil C. Namboodiripad, Managing Director, OTPC.
The MoU has been inked for developing a battery energy storage system project of capacity up to 250 MW / 500 MWh in a phased manner in the state of Assam by incorporating a Joint Venture Company.
OTPC sources said that in the presence of Smt. Nandita Gorlosa, Minister of Power of Assam, the MoU was signed by Sanil C. Namboodiripad and Rakesh Kumar (IAS), Managing Director, APDCL and senior officials of APDCL and OTPC were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Power Smt. Nandita Gorlosa said that the project will be an important milestone in fulfilling the vision of the Chief Minister of Assam of making the state a leader in green energy transition and advised expeditious implementation. MD, APDCL said that they are implementing significant solar energy capacity and battery energy storage projects are key for successful integration of upcoming solar power projects. He further added that with this project, Assam will be a pioneer in implementing an energy storage system. Highlighting the benefits of the project, Sanil C. Namboodiripad said that the project will help the state in improving power availability during peak load hours, improving integration of renewable energy generation with the electricity grid and enhancing grid reliability. An investment of Rs 2,000 crores will be made in the state for developing the project. During construction and operation stages of the project, significant direct and indirect employment opportunities will also be generated.
“OTPC, a reliable energy supplier for Assam since 2014, is keen to be a partner of Assam in its transition towards decarbonized energy mix. The energy storage project will bring in multiple avenues of employment, boost to local businesses, improved utilization of green energy, carbon emission reduction and overall socio-economic development in Assam,” said Namboodiripad.
OTPC owns and operates a 726 MW gas based combined cycle power plant which caters to 25% of energy demand of all seven Northeastern states. As a strategic and reliable energy partner, OTPC plans to play a vital role in the clean energy transition of the nation by setting up energy storage systems on pan India basis for better integration of green energy with existing electric power systems.
