Police personnel, including SP (Sepahijala), injured in Tipra Motha attack on BJP candidate house in Takarjala
At least 10 to 12 police personnel with few civilians, including Superintendent of Police (Sepahijala) Bijoy Debbarma, were injured on Friday after alleged ‘Tipra Motha’ miscreants attacked the residence of a BJP candidate in 18-Takarjala-Jampuijala, Nirmal Debbarma.
Sources said, a large group of ‘Tipra Motha’ supporters attempted to storm the house of BJP candidate from the Takarjala ADC constituency and Mandal president, Nirmal Debbarma, in the Lampakrai Khami area under Takarjala police station.
The situation reportedly escalated when ‘Tipra Motha’ supporters, while campaigning in the area, began hurling abuses against the BJP and its candidate. BJP supporters present at the spot initially requested them to maintain decorum, but this led to a heated exchange of words. The altercation soon turned violent, with the ‘Tipra Motha’ supporters allegedly launching an organized attack on BJP workers, forcing them to flee.
The attackers then attempted to storm the residence of Nirmal Debbarma. Meanwhile, information about the incident reached Takarjala police station, prompting immediate deployment of additional forces from Bisramganj, led by SP Bijoy Debbarma.
Police personnel initially tried to bring the situation under control through dialogue. However, the situation worsened as the miscreants allegedly turned aggressive and attacked the police team with stone slingshots. In the ensuing clash, police managed to disperse the mob, but not before at least 12 personnel, including the SP, sustained injuries due to stone pelting and physical assaults.
During the clash, miscreants also ransacked a Tata Ace goods carrying vehicle and injured its driver with sling shots. All injured personnel were taken to Bisramganj hospital for treatment.
Police sources said that the situation in the area is currently tense but remains under control and a large number of security forces were also deployed to defuse the escalating tension.
