Political influence shields arms trade in Sonamura, police actions under question after recover of a pistol
Political influence shields arms trade in Sonamura, police actions under question after recover of a pistol
Political patronage has once again come under scrutiny in Sonamura, where the police are allegedly being hindered from taking firm action against criminals. There are growing allegations that a section of political leaders are providing protection to social anti-elements and drug peddlers at various levels. The recent incident in the Nirbhoypur area under Jatrapur police station of Sonamura subdivision has once again brought this issue to the forefront. Although the police attempted to divert attention after the incident, the truth has gradually come to light.
Early on Wednesday morning, police along with the Border Security Force (BSF) carried out a joint operation at the residence of a suspected drug peddler named Chiranjit Shil (Gedu), driver of local BJP-Mandal president in Nirbhoypur.
During the raid, one pistol was recovered inside his home, but the police claimed that the pistol was found in the area behind the accused’s house. The OC of Jatrapur police station stated that the joint operation continued in the early morning. The recovered pistol was reportedly found hidden under bricks behind the house. Personnel of BSF’s 69 Battalion and local villagers were present during the operation.
However, a BSF source provided a different version, stating that the pistol was recovered from inside the house itself. Acting on secret information, BSF initially cordoned off the house of the accused and later informed the police. After that, a joint operation was conducted and a sophisticated pistol seized inside the house.
Local sources said that suspected drug and arms smuggler Chiranjit Shil has been involved in drug smuggling from across the international border for a long time. In 2021, a large quantity of contraband had also been recovered from his house, and though he was arrested at that time, he was soon released and resumed his illegal activities under political protection.
In the present case as well, the police allegedly had the opportunity to arrest him, but under pressure from certain leaders, the accused was asked to appear at the police station at a later time instead of being taken into custody immediately, said local sources.
Locals claim that due to political backing, Chiranjit moves around fearlessly and continues his drug smuggling network. A few days ago, his photograph showing him holding a firearm reportedly went viral on social media. Later, it was claimed that the photo was generated using AI, but it is believed to be part of a planned propaganda. So far, the police have not made any clear statement on this matter.
BSF officials have not ruled out the possibility of the accused being involved not only in drug trade but also in arms smuggling. The apparent leniency shown by the police towards such a suspect has raised serious questions among the public regarding the role and responsibility of law enforcement agencies in dealing with hardened criminals.
