River water receding in Agartala, many still in camps
Though, the flood situation in adjoining areas of river Howrah is now improving after stopping of incessant rainfall, which started from August 19 to till August 22 morning in and around Agartala , but, flood water from river Howrah are now flooding new areas of the capital city.
Due to very heavy and continuous rainfall over the past 4 days since 19th August 2024, the water level of rivers in Tripura has remained inflated significantly. Tripura received one of the highest levels of rainfall in the last 24 hours on 22.08.202 4notably in West Tripura District (Agartala: 233 mm) , as a result ,the whole capital city is affected with floods very badly.
The fresh flood at the adjoining areas of river Howrah and other parts of the state after incessant rain during the last 48 hours under the influence of the low pressure and cyclonic circulation in North Bangladesh, rendered thousands people became homeless in all low lying areas of river Howrah.
The administration has set up dozens relief camps in different parts of the Agartala city and other parts of the state and above 65,400 families have been rescued so far.
Though since Thursday morning, the flood water from river Howrah started moving towards all low-lying areas of Indranagar, Khata Khal and portions of Bhati Abhoynagar area. From Thursday noon, though, flood water started receding from river Howrah, still thousands of victim families are in different relief camps.
Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) sources all flood water pump machines are continuously running to flash out water except two pumps in Ganaraj Chowmuhani and Banamalipur as there two pump machines are submerged in rainwater.
Chief Minister Dr Mank Saha, AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder along with other administrative persons are continuously monitoring the flood situation across Agartala and they have also visited many relief camps to review relief and rescue operations.
While, the flood situation in embarkment areas of river Howrah including Srilanka Basti, Aralia, Pratapgarh, Baldakhal , Kashipur and Chandrapur areas still remain grim.
Altogether many team in Agartala city have been engaged for rescue operation and rescue team members are working in all low lying areas near the river Howrah with boats
It may be recalled here that major places in Agartala Municipal Corporation areas near Howrah have been inundated with areas like Pratapgarh, Srilankabasti, Banamalipur, Shibnagar, Rishi Colony, Aralia and Chandrapur being severely affected after heavy rainfall on August 20 night.
Speaking with media persons, DM(West) Dr Vishal Kumar said that the situation is improving in all adjoining areas of river Howrah, no fresh rain reported after Thursday afternoon and there is no need to panic. He added that flood water rises in river Howrah after fresh rainfalls and receding of water will be completed soon if there is no fresh rain.
After surging of water all over the plain land areas in and around Agartala city, especially in some bordering areas of Sadar subdivision, many relief camps were set up in Sadar areas.
Giving details of relief material supplied in all relief camps, DM added that inmates were served different kinds of food with regular meals and only package drinking water were distributed in all camps. He added that two times a day medical teams are visiting all camps. So far, no outbreak of any water-borne diseases was reported from any camps under Sadar subdivision.
He also said that so far the district administration unable to assess the property losses in the flood, but they will able to asses’ property losses after flood water completely recedes.
