Sensational Muhuri Amit Acharjee murder: Two more advocates arrested

Two more advocates on Wednesday arrested by the police investigation team involved with the sensational murder of deed writer (Muhuri) Amit Acharjee.

On the ill-fated day of September 5th, 2023, deceased deed writer Amit Acharjee was severely thrashed by a group of advocates at the district court complex of Agartala. Soon after the incident, Acharjee was admitted to GB Hospital in critical condition and after a few days’ treatment, he succumbed to death due to his critical thrashing injuries.

Later, on September 23rd, 2023 last, his mother filed an FIR at West Agartala police station against all suspected assailants and also registered the case under section 302 and 34 of IPC.

The police investigation team had earlier arrested two advocates identified as  Gopal Singh and Anirban Talapatra, who are now in jail custody, but remaining assailants were on the run and police were unable to arrest escaped murderers.

On Wednesday morning ( April 3rd, 2024), the investigation officer (IO), Sub-Inspector (SI) Ranjit Das based on intelligence inputs, managed to arrest two more assailants identified as advocates Rajesh Sarkar and Rajib Deb.

OC of West Agartala police station, Paritosh Das said that soon after arrest of advocates Rajesh Sarkar and Rajib Deb, police produced them before a local court with police remand appeals for interrogation. As per the request of police, the court granted three days of police remand for both arrested accused persons.

OC added that two more assailants are still beyond the reach of police and hoped that with fresh interrogation of two arrested accused, they will be able to arrest all escaped assailants.
