Sold 3-days old baby rescued, district administration provides relief to poor widow mother
After a report of a newborn girl child allegedly sold by her mother with an amount of Rs. 5000 at Taraban Colony North Gandacherra ADC village of Dhalai district, the district administration on Saturday rescued the child and handed over the baby to her mother.
On Friday, leader of opposition (LoP) and CPI (M) state secretary, Jitendra Chaudhury drew the attention of the state administration and the Chief Secretary to investigate the matter that a 37-year-old mother had to sell her new-born-baby due to extreme poverty.
One Mormari Tripura (39) gave birth to a girl child on Thursday at the Gandachara Sub-Divisional Hospital and the next day she reportedly sold the child to a couple for Rs 5,000, citing severe poverty.
Mormari Tripura, mother of five children and a resident of Taravan Colony in Uttar Gandacherra ADC village including the new born, had lost her husband five months ago after he committed suicide due to extreme poverty.
Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury immediately after learning of the incident informed Dhalai District Magistrate (DM) Saju Vaheed A and Chief Secretary of Tripura, J K Sinha and sought their intervention.
The District Magistrate and his team on Saturday rescued the baby and handed it over to the woman and said that the mother and the newborn are now at a home in Gandacherra.
Vaheed said that it is a fact that the woman with four children (excluding the newborn) has been facing severe poverty especially after her husband’s death. But it is not a fact that the woman sold her ration card and other documents to others. He said that some support is also being provided to the needy woman.
While, opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury on Friday criticizing the BJP government and the Tipra Motha led Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) said that both the state government and ADC administration totally failed to provide necessary assistance and rural jobs to distressed people and they are in hilly areas of the state are in very pathetic conditions.
He said that explaining the serious economic situation and other problems of the rural and remote areas, he urged the Chief Secretary of the state to arrange rural jobs under the MGNREGA.
He added that he has also requested the authorities to solve the other basic problems including water supply facing the people in the hilly, remote and rural areas.
