Thieves attempt to attack police; two more arrested in Dharmanagar school rod theft case
In a dramatic turn, two accused thieves allegedly attempted to attack police personnel during an arrest operation in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar subdivision. But, their escape bid failed, and two thieves were in connection with a major rod theft case.
Giving details to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dharmanagar police station Meena Debbarma of said that the incident occurred during a late-night raid on Friday when police went to arrest one of the accused, identified as Sulaj Miah. In an attempt to flee, he reportedly jumped into a pond and tried to attack the police team. He was eventually beaten and taken into custody.
During interrogation, police arrested another accused, Abdul Kalam, for his alleged involvement in the same case. Both accused were residents of the Bhagyapur area of North Tripura district
She said that on April 18 last, when a large quantity of iron rods was stolen from an under-construction residential school building at Sonarubasa Bonbari area under Dharmanagar police station. The building is being constructed under the ‘Pujya Ashok Singhal Seva Project’ run by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Acting on a written complaint, police launched an investigation and successfully recovered nearly 1.5 tonnes of stolen rods. Earlier, two accused—Gayas Miahand his son Rahul Mia from Yakubnagar—were arrested and produced before the court.
Police also traced the location where the stolen rods had been hidden; leading them to a pond owned by Sulaj Miah, which further linked him to the case.
