Based on specific information, police on Saturday seized large quantities of Brown Sugar from a luxury car (Thar) at 41-Mile Naka point of National Highway-8 under Mungiakami police station of Khowai district.
Police sources said that during Naka checking of vehicles at the NH and ongoing anti-drug campaign by Mungiakami police station, police intercepted a luxury Thar vehicle without a registration number. Giving details, a senior police official said that the action was carried out based on a tip-off received by Officer-in-Charge Sanu Debbarma from a confidential source.
Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered Brown Sugar cleverly concealed inside seven soap cases. A quantity of banned cough syrup was also seized during the operation. Three persons travelling in the vehicle were detained in connection with the incident.
Following the recovery, Teliamura Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rohan Kisan along with DCM Sandeep Debbarma, rushed to the spot and conducted an on-the-spot inspection of the entire operation.
Speaking to the media, SDPO Rohan Kisan, stated that during preliminary interrogation, the detained persons confessed that the contraband was being transported from Meghalaya to Tripura. He added that the involvement of a larger drug trafficking network cannot be ruled out. A thorough and detailed investigation is underway, and strict legal action will be taken against all those involved.
Police authorities have further stated that such Naka checking and special drives will be intensified in the coming days to curb the free flow of narcotics in the state.
