Tripura Cabinet raises hostel stipend, approves recruitment and new coaching centres
In a significant decision, the Tripura Cabinet has increased the daily stipend for students residing in government-run boarding hostels under the Scheduled Caste Welfare Department from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per day. The hike will benefit a total of 712 inmates across the state.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat on Thursday afternoon, Tourism and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the enhanced stipend will cover students of 56 government hostels, including 33 boys’ hostels, 22 girls’ hostels, and one hostel run by an NGO under the department.
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday, also approved recruitment for several government posts. These include six Assistant Survey Officers and 10 Revenue Inspectors under the Revenue Department through the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), as well as 32 junior driver posts under the Health and Family Welfare Department to be recruited through the Transport Department.
Free Coaching Centres for Competitive Exams:
Chowdhury further informed that, in line with the 2025–26 State Budget announcements, the Cabinet has approved the establishment of three free coaching centres for all-India competitive examinations at Agartala, Udaipur, and Ambassa.
The Agartala coaching centre will operate from the new building complex of Birchandra State Central Library and will offer a 12-month coaching programme for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirants, with 20 hours of classes per week.
For examinations conducted by SSC, RRB, and IBPS, six-month coaching programmes will be held at Ambassa and at Netaji Subash Government Degree College in Udaipur, with 24 hours of classes per week.
‘Nari Adalat’ Pilot Project in 10 Gram Panchayats:
The Cabinet has also approved the implementation of a new scheme titled ‘Nari Adalat’ under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. As part of a pilot project, 10 Nari Adalats will begin functioning in 10 Gram Panchayats across the state.
These forums will address cases related to domestic violence, crimes against women, and other forms of atrocities. The scheme will be implemented by the Social Welfare and Social Education Department. Each Nari Adalat will be run by a nine-member committee comprising reputed local personalities, with the provision to include political representatives as members.
