Two Bangladeshi smugglers shot dead, one more injured at Belonia border

Two Bangladeshi smugglers were shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) at the International Border in South Tripura and another Bangladeshi smuggler suffered critical injuries in the firing, while two Indian smugglers were arrested.
Sources said that the incident happened at bordering Amzadnagar village under Belonia police station of South Tripura district in the wee hours of Friday (July 25, 2025).
Sources added that BSF jawans posted at that border were keeping a close vigil on the border when they spotted a major smuggling attempt. As they tried to intercept, the smugglers got violent and attacked BSF jawans with sharp weapons and started stone-pelting targeting the jawans. In self-defence, the BSF personnel opened fire.
Three smugglers received gunshot wounds and fell to the ground. While one of them died on the spot, two others were taken back to Bangladesh by their companions, said a police official.
He said that injured Bangladeshi smugglers were taken to the Parshuram Upazila health centre in Bangladesh, where one of them died. The other person is undergoing treatment there.
BSF sources said that after the incident BSF personnel recovered a huge consignment of drugs including Yaba tablets and dry Cannabis (Ganja) worth Rs 15 lakh was recovered from the site.
The body of the Bangladeshi smuggler, who died on the spot, was handed over to the authorities of the neighbouring country in the presence of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers on Friday (July 25, 2025).
A commandant-level flag meeting was also held and BGB officers expressed concern over the firing. But BSF made their position clear that smuggling will not be tolerated along the India-Bangladesh border. Besides, the BSF was compelled to fire in self-defence as the smugglers became violent, said the official.
Meanwhile, police sources added that a large number of security forces including BSF were deployed in that portion of border after the incident and two Indian smugglers were also arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt.
