Two prime accused arrested in delivery boy’s murder at Lefunga
In connection with the murder of a delivery boy during a picnic at the Tufania Lunga tea garden under Lefunga police station in West Tripura district, police on Tuesday arrested two prime accused.
According to police sources, the deceased was identified as Prabir Shil, a delivery boy who had gone on a picnic with a group of friends on December 24 at the Tufania Lunga tea garden area. During the picnic, an altercation broke out between Prabir and some of his friends, following which he was brutally assaulted.
Local residents rushed the injured youth to a nearby hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to GB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day while undergoing treatment.
Police said that after the assault, the victim’s father lodged a complaint at Lefunga police station. Following Prabir Shil’s death, a murder case was registered and an investigation was launched.
During the course of the investigation, police arrested Sekhar Tanti and Tanmoy Orang, both residents of the Tufania Lunga area, as the main accused in the case. The accused will be produced before a local court with a plea for police remand to facilitate further interrogation and to ascertain the involvement of other persons in the incident.
The incident comes amid a series of violent attacks against delivery workers in Tripura. Earlier, North Tripura district police arrested five accused in connection with the suicide of Prasenjit Sarkar (23) of Dharmanagar, a delivery boy working with a private courier company. He allegedly died by suicide on December 14 after being publicly humiliated and assaulted by the accused.
In another incident on December 21, a delivery boy was allegedly assaulted by a CISF jawan at Narayanpur Bazar in West Tripura district after he refused to deliver a parcel at an address different from the one mentioned. The accused CISF jawan was later detained by Airport police station for investigation.
These back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns over the safety of delivery workers across Tripura.
