Uncle, nephew arrested with 100 live bullets from Deoghar-Agartala Express
The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Wednesday seized one hundred live rounds of 2.2 mm from the Deoghar-Agartala Express train standing at Dharmanagar Railway Station in the early hours of Wednesday and arrested two persons.
Giving details, Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Dharmanagar GRP station, Uttam Kumar Koloi stated, "Currently, due to communal violence in Dharmanagar Sub-division and on the eve of Durga Puja, special surveillance and search operations are being conducted at the railway station.
During surveillance, police became suspicious of two individuals in the S1 coach of the Deoghar-Agartala Express train. Upon questioning, the two young men said they were coming from Dimapur. Due to inconsistencies in their statements and unusual behaviour they were taken off from the train and brought to the GRP station for questioning. After a thorough investigation and search in their bags, police found a plastic packet containing one hundred live rounds. The two were then arrested by the GRP police."
During police interrogation, the arrested persons identified themselves as Dipankar Sen (32) and Prasenjit Das (25), both from Sepahijala district. Sen's current address is in the Uttam Madhyam para under Amtali Police Station area of West Tripura district.
Meanwhile, the arrested individuals confessed that they had gone to Dimapur as uncle and nephew to purchase this ammunition. On October 8 they bought these hundred rounds of bullets from an unknown person without any legal documentation. That day, they first traveled from Dimapur to Lumding and then they boarded the train from Lumding heading towards Agartala. It has been reported that during police questioning, the arrested individuals attempted to withhold much information.
Later, the police officials filed a case against the arrested uncle and nephew under Section 25(1)(A) of the Arms Act, 1959, and Section 61(2)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case number is 14/2024 GRP station. Police forwarded the before court of Chief Judicial Magistrate with seven days police remand appeals for interrogation. The court granted three days of police remand and GRP are initiating an investigation into the incident by bringing the arrestees into police remand.
