Violence in Kumarghat, 20 injured, six arrested
Normal life was totally paralyzed as the entire Kumarghat subdivision witnessed massive political violence and clashes among the supporters of BJP and the alliance of CPI(M) and Congress amid attacks and counter-attacks.
A total of at least 20 people are reported to have been injured in these political clashes including one sub inspector and an officer-in-charge of Kumarghat police station. The police claim to have arrested six miscreants from each BJP and the Left and Congress alliance. A huge contingent of security forces has been deployed in the area to prevent any kind of untoward incident.
Despite being a busy market day the subdivision wore a deserted look and the political feud sparked off on Friday night and both sides have convened press conferences blaming each other.
According to Kamal Debbarma (SDPO) of Kumarghat, a police team rushed to Sonaimuri Village of Kumarghat at the tip of an input that a tension had erupted between the BJP and the alliance of CPM and Congress. While trying to tame the situation a police officer and a BJP worker suffered fatal injuries following which the party office of Congress was ransacked by a group of miscreants.
The tension escalated further on Saturday morning when a worker of Congress and CPM alliance came under severe attack. Demanding immediate arrest of the culprits, the supporters of Congress and CPM alliance staged a road blockade at Bhagat Singh Chowmuhani area of Kumarghat. The protest once again brought the anguished supporters of both the sides face to face resulting in a clash in which one BJP worker identified as Ranu Kairi sustained injuries.
The police had to resort to mild Lathi-Charge to subdue the enveloping tension but Sankar Saha the OC of the Kumarghat police station was left seriously injured in the process. Minister Bhagaban Das and a BJP candidate for Pabiacherra assembly seat held a press conference at the Mandal Office accusing the workers of the alliance for storming the BJP booth office at Rakhalthali area of Sonaimuri Village leaving a BJP worker named Nishi Malakar seriously injured on Friday night.
The Minister described the cowardly act as the outcome of their frustration realizing their certain defeat. On the other hand Birajit Sinha the State President of Congress also rushed to Kumarghat Congress Office and told the media persons that a total of 16 workers of the alliance have sustained serious injuries in the attack unleashed by the ruling BJP for the fear of losing power. He also questioned the role of police in dealing with the matter. He alleged that despite disclosing the names of the culprits to the local police the miscreants are still at large. A silence of graveyard prevailed in the entire Kumarghat town, though it has been a busy market day.
Later on Unakoti District Administrator Bishal Kumar and Kanta Jehangir SP jointly held a press meet and apprised the media persons that the incident of Rakhaltali of Sunaimuri village which occurred on Friday night is under investigation and a preliminary investigation has revealed that the clash between two people at Rakhaltali had nothing to do with politics, it was related to their personal issue but unfortunately political color was added to the fact. They claimed to have picked six suspects in the case. The DM also informed that an all party meeting has also been conducted where the delegates of the party have expressed regret and assured the administration to stay on alert mode to avoid unwanted situations. The police are trying to nab the other culprits through combing operations. The all party meeting was attended by Bhagaban Das the incumbent Minister, Satyaban Das , Congress candidate of the constituency, Tarun Saha ,Congress leader, Prasannajit Sinha the Left Front leader too.
