Agartala city police on Monday morning arrested Youth Congress leader Md  Sahajan Islam, who was in massive controversy for his derogatory remarks against the Chief Minister and had been absconding for the last six months, along with a case of alleged forgery.

“Shahjahan Islam made a derogatory statement against CM Dr Manik Saha on June 8 last year, while Md  Sahajan Islam before entering into West Agartala police station complex claimed that he was not arrested, but he surrendered before police.

While speaking with media persons, SDPO(Sadar)( Debaprasad Roy said that they have registered a case and arrested his father and brother. But he was absconding that time and now, police came to know that he was hiding at Joypur last night and arrested him.

He further added that Shahjahan, while he was absconding, appealed for bail at a district court, but later, the police found the signature used was forged that led to registration of an additional case against him.

“Two cases were lodged against him under different sections and police are now interrogating him,” said Roy.

Shahjahan’s home at Shantipara area of Agartala came under attack from some unknown hooligans after his criticism against the state government and state police for alleged silence over a few tensed incidents regarding slaughtering of cows on Eid-al-Zuha or Bakrid at Udaipur in Gomati district in June last year. Later, police arrested Shahjahan’s father and brother, but released them after a month.

It may be recalled that  Tripura Police on June 9, 2025 last arrested the father and brother of a Youth Congress leader Md Sahajan Islam for his derogatory comments against Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, state government and other BJP leaders in connection with the celebration of Eid-al-Adha on June 7.

Congress, however, alleged that a group of miscreants backed by BJP attacked the residence of Sahajan Islam at Shantipara.

BJP’s state minority morcha President and former Minister Billal Mia filed a complaint against Md Sahajan Islam at West Agartala police station for his statement against the Chief Minister on social media.
